IIM Calcutta started functioning from Emerald Bower, Barrackpur Trunk Road. In those days the Institute was endowed with such eminent academicians as Douglas McGregor, Miles Kennedy, Ravi Mathai, Ashok Mitra, Barun De, Kamini Adhikary, Eshwar Dayal, Warren Bennis, Jati K. Sengupta & Gouranga Chattopadhyay.

In 1975, The institute moved to its own sprawling 135-acre campus at Joka, on the outskirts of Calcutta.

The foundation stone of the Joka campus was laid by Sri Morarji Desai, the then Dy. Prime Minister of India on Dec 15, 1968. The Institute moved to its present campus in 1975.

IIMC offers a wide range of courses for the aspiring business graduate to choose from. Apart from the Postgraduate Diploma in Management(PGDM), a course ranked among the top 10 in Asia, IIMC was the first in the country to introduce a Postgraduate Diploma In Computer Aided Management(PGDCM) to cater to the burgeoning specific managerial need of the IT industry. IIMC also offers a part time Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management(PGDBM) for working managers with relevant work experience. The Fellow Programme of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is a full-time doctoral level programme in different fields of Management as well as in various disciplines and areas related to Management.

Two kinds of needs are addressed through the Fellow Programme.

The programme offers a unique opportunity to engage in high- quality interdisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary research. The Institute started the Fellow Programme in 1971. The Fellow Programme serves the needs of government, industry, financial institutions and development agencies by making available to them individuals with a high level of research experience.

Specialisation offered include Behavioural Sciences, Economics, Finance & Control, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Management Information Systems, Mathematics for Management, Operations Management, Regional Development, Sociology, Statistics.

In the first year, students of the Fellow Programme in Management take courses along with the Postgraduate students, while those specialising in the management related disciplines, undertake doctoral level courses.

At the end of the first year, the students are required to take up a summer project in the industry or alternatively, work on a term paper under the guidance of a faculty member related to the major area of specialisation.

In the second year, all the students have to take up Ph.D. level courses. On successfully completion of the course requirements and a Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE), the students start working on their thesis.

Through an upgradation of its earlier 2-Year Evening Postgraduate Certificate Programme in General Management (PGCGM) offered since 1981, IIMC launched this 3-Year Part Time Evening Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) Programme in 1994 as one of its major initiatives. The PGDBM Programme is recognised by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and enjoys equivalence to an MBA degree of Indian Universities.

The Institute's concern for conducting this Evening Programme in Business Management emerged from the appreciation of a responsibility to offer a quality management education to the young practising and in-service executives of organisations in and around Calcutta.

Through this programme, IIMC facilitates a process for the students to integrate their real-life work experiences with the conceptual and analytical foundations and development in management disciplines. The focus of this Programme is to inculcate among the students such perceptions, knowledge, skills and abilities that would enable them to become effective managers in the modern business processes and to assume higher levels of managerial responsibilities.

MDPs are short-term residential courses for senior management personnel. People eligible to apply for the MDPs are General Managers and Heads of Marketing/Strategic Business Unit Heads / Senior and Middle level managers in Sales,Product and Brand Management and Corporate Planning. The teaching method will be participative,using case studies,group exercises and concept discussions.

The programme seeks to address the corporate need by developing strategic managers. It would enhance the strategic thinking, i.e. cross functional, holistic, and future oriented thinking ability of the participants in relation to the overall corporate objectives and the emerging company environment. By attending the programme participants will be equipped with various concepts, tools, and techniques to think and act strategically in a highly dynamic environment working at any level and at any function in the organisation. Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has a long tradition of offering the prestigious Advanced Management Programme (AMP) for senior executives of Public Sector Enterprises in collaboration with the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Ministry of Industry, Government of India. For more than a decade, a large number of senior managers have benefited from participating in this programme. Since last year the institute has opened up the programme to senior decision-makers of the Public as well as the Private sector.

The purpose of the programme is to increase the confidence of leaders and explore new horizons that help them to respond to the world of the present and influence the world of the future.

This programme is specially designed for executives across levels and functions. However, executives belonging to middle and senior levels who have some cross-functional exposures or have co-ordinated multifunctional activities, or have been actively involved in planning and policy making in the organisation would derive maximum benefit from the programme.

IMZ, the IIM Calcutta eZine, is an online "Management-zine". It provides the perfect platform for the exchange of ideas, thoughts and "fundas". IMZ is all about exploring the Art and Science of Management and features interesting articles by students.

INCA is the largest Student club in IIM Calcutta with a membership of over 100 students. INCA, or INitiative for Community Action, is a voluntary student body that works closely with NGOs in the Kolkata region.

IIM Calcutta is also known for its bands JBS and Baro-C, famously named after the buses that 'connect us to civilization' - Joka Band Stand and 12-C.

A part of the cultural wing, the IIMC "Kweej" club is essentially defined by the precocious achievements of some of the country's legendary quizzers.

Students from business schools across the country participate in Intaglio, IIMC's Annual Business Meet. From marketing games to ad campaigns to quizzing, the meet is one of the most publicised in the B-School community and invites sponsorship from leading corporates.
